FAQ

no one has all the answers...but here are some things we know to be true...

Are beginners welcome at three dog? ...absolutely!

All of our classes are appropriate for all levels, but we suggest starting with a Flow or Renew class and letting the teacher know that you are new. We encourage beginners to pace themselves and trust their own bodies. In time you'll build strength, focus, stamina and flexibility. Check out our New to Yoga page for more information.

What makes this style of yoga unique? ...our practice is based on intuition and transformation, rather than perfection.

Our studio was built on the belief that yoga should be fun...and powerful. Our classes include focus on breathing and simply being in your body. There is no dogma, just the cultivation of your own highest potential.

Why are some classes heated? ....sweat, it does a body (and mind) good!

We are not “hot” yoga; we offer moderately heated classes, to encourage opening and detoxification of the body and the mind. Our Power classes are heated to around 85-90 degrees and allow you to safely achieve serious sweat and deep release. Our other classes are kept in the mid to upper 70s and our classroom is well-ventilated.

What do I need to do before my first class? ...just relax.

Just come in about 10 minutes before the scheduled class time to register and sign in. We will help you get set up for your class and answer any questions you might have.

What should I wear? ...be comfortable!

You’ll want to wear comfortable clothes that will stretch with you and avoid baggy tees that tend to fall over your head when you bend over. The studio will be warm, but dressing in layers is a good idea. Also...yoga is done in your bare feet, so no socks, no shoes -- no problems!

Do I need to bring anything? ...just an open mind!

If you have a yoga mat, please bring it. If not, we rent and sell mats in the studio. You will probably want to bring a towel and a water bottle -- we have filtered water available as well as restroom facilities and cubbies for your things.

What if I’m not flexible - or focused? ...you are definitely in the right place!

Yoga is not about putting your foot behind your head, holding a uncomfortable poses or beating yourself up. Classes at three dog are fun and focus on peeling back resistances, one layer at a time, to encourage transformation and growth. We’ll you to find your own natural wisdom, rather than fighting it...and the best way to become more flexible and focused is to start today!

Should I eat before class? ...it depends.

It is generally best to avoid heavy meals for at least two hours before class. however, everyone is different, so a light snack, like fruit or a granola bar about an hour before may be helpful to you...bottom line: if you’re so full it hurts to bend over, Downward Facing Dog won’t feel so good.

How challenging will the class be for me? ...you decide!

You always control the intensity of your practice and we encourage you to work at your own pace in every class. You’ll find that some days your practice will seem easy and some days it will kick your you-know-what. Just go with the flow and step to your edge...but not past it!

How often should i practice? ...often!

Consistency is the key to experiencing the full benefits of the yoga practice... and to making new yoga friends!! Practicing three days a week will change in your body and five or six days a week will change your life.

Can yoga help me lose weight? ...absolutely!

Our Power classes offer the combination of strength and cardiovascular exercise, a powerful one-two punch for burning fat and calories (from 400-800 per hour)....the heat also helps to raise the core body temperature to a level that helps regulate metabolism and appetite. Additionally, studies have shown that yoga's stress-busting benefits help you stay committed to good nutrition and fitness habits. Plus, the practice just makes you feel so darn good, you’ll forget you’re exercising.

I’m pregnant; is yoga safe for me? ...probably, but consult with your doctor.

During pregnancy, yoga can help strengthen body and mind for labor, as well as ease nausea, back pain and swelling. As with any exercise program during pregnancy, you’ll want to consult with your doctor before starting or continuing your yoga practice. We recommend our Flow and Renew classes and ask that you inform each teacher that you’re expecting. See our Expecting a Baby page for more information.

What does the word “namaste” mean? ...mutual respect and connection.

At the end of each class, our teachers offer the ancient Sanskrit word “namaste” as a symbol of gratitude, respect and connection. Students answer with “namaste” in the same spirit. This exchange allows us all to come together energetically to a place of connection and timelessness. A short translation is: “The Light in me recognizes and honors the Light in you, and in that place of Light, you and I are one.”
