come out and play…for real!

teach. assist. give.

Monday, November 14th, 2011

this weekend, california power yoga got born at three dog yoga…in a BIG way! and we introduced our newest teacher, Mac. short for MacBeth, ask us, we’ll tell you. that’s him, goofing around at left.

20 brave and brilliant three dog yoga student and staff came together to learn and play at our very first ANATOMY+ALIGNMENT+ASSISTING training. we spent 12 fun hours together practicing, playing and connecting.

why assisting training?

assisting training is a great way to start seeing your practice from the “other side of the mat”. we look at anatomy for yoga practice, not the “by the book” color in the muscle kind of anatomy learning, but real applicable stuff that helps yogis learn more about each pose.

we had a blast learning and sharing, exploring the asanas of the power yoga practice and practicing assists on one another. to cap things off, we jumped into the deep end and assisted a real-time power yoga practice…it was some real outside the lines fun!

what is california power yoga?

we started california power yoga as the teacher training and community service limb of three dog yoga.

we saw a curiosity and desire to share in the three dog community and wanted to create a way in which our students could learn more, go deeper and be of service through their personal yoga practice…so, it was a natural next step to create a full-service teacher training program that will share the best of what we know.

we offer two-levels of assistant training, a 200-hour teacher training, continuing education workshops and a community service program powered by our assistant/teacher trainees. it’s gonna get really BIG around here!

what’s next?

this saturday, we have a one-hour information session for our 200-hour teacher training program, starting in january 2012. at the meeting we’ll share our schedules, course outline and more. we’ll also release the course application and answer questions. if you’ve ever thought about teaching power yoga, we invite you to come and check it out!

we’ll keep you updated on all the goings on right here on the three dog yoga blog…for now, be ready to see some lit up new teachers and assistants coming your way soon!

three dog road trip: let’s sweat in SF!

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

hi there!

are you ready for something FUN?? so are we! it’s called the Yoga Journal Conference and it’s coming to San Francisco January 12-16 of 2011. what even better than that? Baron Baptiste is teaching an all-day session on (could it get any better?) Friday the 13th!

the thing is: it DOES get better. on Friday night, there’s a concert with Krishna Das (or as most of us know him: that guy who sings the Savasana song we like)…there cannot be a better way to spend a day with friends!

we will be cancelling all our classes on the 13th, to take ourselves down to the Embarcadero and sweat it out together…we hope you’ll join us! if we get at least 30 three dog yogis signed up for the intensive and the concert, we will rent a slick tour bus and make the journey together…watch out SF!

october 21 (that’s this Friday) is the last day for early bird registration, so the time is NOW…get registered here….then send your confirmation email to anna[at]threedogyoga.com to book your seat on the three dog express!

have questions? let me see if i can tackle a few…

who is Baron Baptiste?
Baron is one of the world’s leading yoga teachers and the creator of the style of yoga we practice at three dog. he created the 40 days to personal revolution program and leads teacher trainings throughout the world. all of our teachers — and many of our students — have trained with Baron at one of his Foundations weekends, Power Flow Immersions or teacher training Bootcamps. Baptiste Yoga continues to inspire us through it’s focus on tapping potential, inspiring creativity, awakening passion and creating possibility.

am i ready for a full day of power yoga?
YES! absolutely, positively, undoubtedly YES! david and i went to this intensive a few years ago and we had never taken a power yoga class that lasted more than an hour…and we’d never, ever practiced in the heat! we were challenged, but in a really playful and inspiring way…you will be, too!

who’s Krisha Das? what’s a kirtan concert?
from Yoga Journal – “layering traditional Hindu kirtan (chanting) with instantly accessible melodies and modern instrumentation, Krishna Das has been called yoga’s ‘rock star’” if you’ve been Savasana-ing with us, chances are you’ve enjoyed his voice a time or two (or twenty) already. a kirtan concert is an opportunity to hear his amazing music live and in-person…and even participate yourself!

what should i do to prepare?
nothing! just keep up with your regular practice (you’ll want to do that anyway) and let your enthusiasm build over the next couple of months! we are going to have a great time and it will be AMAZING to spend the day together!

so get registered and let’s do it!

PARTY!! and you’re invited…

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

hey there…

in case you didn’t know, i LOVE birthdays (all of them, not just mine), because they celebrate life…and how special it is that each one of us was born. my life is touched by all of the awesome people i’ve been lucky to meet in this life (as well as all of those who have, um, challenged me)…and i’m just really glad that all of you were born!

thanks to so many of you, today was one of the BEST birthdays i’ve ever had (it even included a cake by the talented Erica Harriman and pumpkin bread by Jenna of Eat, Live, Run! how did i get so lucky!) so, instead of thinking about all the new smile & laugh lines i’ve developed this year, i’m celebrating the year full of smiles and laughs! AND celebrating BIG is totally my style…i’ve planned the ultimate birthday BASH this weekend….

…and YOU’RE INVITED!

we’re kicking it off with an ACROJAM on Friday night…i am so thrilled that my good friend Brian Lam will be here to treat us to some good FUN, FLYING and general FROLIC! please join us at 5:45 p.m.in the studio.

then, we’re having ACROYOGA WORKSHOPS all weekend. learn or review the basics with us in FUNdamentals on Saturday at 11:15 a.m. learn to FLY in ACROBATICS on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and chill out with THAI MASSAGE/THERAPEUTICS on Sunday at 2 p.m. — it’s all a benefit for Africa Yoga Project…please come in and share the fun!

the BIGGEST part of the celebration will be Sunday’s YOGA AID CHALLENGE for AYP! we’ve rented out the historic Deturk Round Barn and are planning the most awesome yoga class/party ever! it’s all to benefit AYP, and everyone is invited…PLEASE BRING FRIENDS! this will be a great way to introduce someone you love to the yoga that you love! (and don’t try saying you don’t…you’re reading a yoga blog…that pretty much qualifies you for yoga nerd status!)

we’ll be kicking it off with a Skype-in by our friend, AYP Teacher Francis, all the way from Nairobi! then, we’ll be treated to a fun, fun, fun practice with our good friends Paige Elenson, director of the Africa Yoga Project, her fiance (and an amazing yoga teacher) Billy and AYP teacher Margaret, who will rock your world with JOY! i can’t think of a better birthday gift, or any kind of gift, than to hang out or take a class with Paige…she rocks!

to top it all off, we’ll have the distinct privilege of screening the new Africa Yoga Project documentary, just released last week. if you want to learn more about the purpose and possibility of the Africa Yoga Project, you nee to SEE THIS FILM!

i can’t think of a better birthday gift than getting to share all of this with eerybody!

please come! it just won’t be the same without YOU!

breakthrough bootcamp: q+a’s

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

hey there.

i am gettting psyched for monday’s BREAKTHROUGH BOOTCAMP! it’s our kickoff for the YOGAAID CHALLENGE and Africa Yoga Project.

can’t wait to play + sweat with YOU! here’s everything you need to know (and maybe a little more!).

1.WILL IT BE HARD?
only as hard as you make it…it will be like one of our regular POWER classes, with some time for breakout partner work. you’ll work at your own pace (as always), but it will take you to your edge!

2.CAN BEGINNERS COME?

absolutely, positively YES!! this will be a great place to learn all about the power yoga practice…bring your friends who want to give yoga a shot!

3.WHAT IS FINDING “TRUE NORTH”?

you won’t need a compass. true north is a way of being in your body that will ignite your practice. it uses the physical elements of EARTH, WATER, FIRE, AIR and SPACE to bring you into a deeper awareness of your body, your movement and yourself.

true north is one of the hallmarks of Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga, the style of yoga we practice at three dog. my recent trip to assist Level 1 Bootcamp inspired me to create this workshop to share this powerful principle!

4.WILL IT BE A LOT OF STOP AND START?

nope. we’ll explore all the elements of true north in the flow of a power yoga practice. put another way: you will get your flow on and your workout in.

5.WHAT IS THE REST OF MONDAY’S SCHEDULE?

we are closed for the rest of the day on monday…happy labor day!

6.WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

you. your mat. a towel. water bottle. $26 donation for YogaAid/Africa Yoga Project – we will match your $26! (cash, CC or check to TDY all work).

7.HOW DO I SIGN UP?

do it here now…or come see us in the studio this weekend. you can also email me at anna[at]threedogyoga.com

as we journey inward, we reflect our light outward

fall for YogaAid!

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

hello, september 2. it’s hard to believe you’re here already, but we’re thrilled…because that means we’re only one month away from our YogaAid Challenge!

want to know more? here’s the download…

what’s the YogaAid challenge?

the Challenge is a special, 2-hour yoga practice held in hundreds of locations worldwide held on October 1+2, 2011. the practice itself is not the challenge. the real challenge is in being of service to some amazing organizations that are using yoga to make the world a better place for all of us.

what is AYP?
the Africa Yoga Project‘s Baptiste Power Yoga on the Streets program offers free community yoga that is changing lives for young, urban Kenyans. it has introduced hundreds of students in Kenya to the practice of yoga, as well as provided educational scholarships, job training, food stipends, temporary housing and health services. students, ages 16 to 30 years old, come from impoverished backgrounds in Nairobi, Kenya and live on under $2 a day. many are personally affected by HIV/AIDS, have no access to running water or restrooms and are living or have lived on the streets.

Africa Yoga Project also trains and offers financial support to 38 teachers in exchange for teaching yoga in the communities of Nairobi, Kenya. teachers come from the slum areas in which they teach and are able to reach the communities for positive social change.

what’s AYP up to now?
AYP is on a mission to train and hire 50 new teachers in 2012. it takes $2,000 to train and hire a new teacher for one year. this amount will pay the teacher a salary that will allow them to care for themselves and their families. in addition, their teaching will bring peace, joy and inspiration to their communities in new and powerful ways!

what can we do?
here’s where the $4,000 comes in. we are so inspired by what AYP is doing, we’re going to raise enough $ to train and hire two new AYP teachers. to kick things off, we’ve put $2,000 into our three dog team…that’s one teacher trained and hired already…now we’re asking you to step up!

we’ve created a bunch of fun fall events that we KNOW you’ll want to be part of…all you have to do is register, show up and have fun!

how can you help?
join us for any of our “FALL FOR AYP!” events…join our YogAid team and raise funds yourself! you’ll have a blast and be leading the change at the same time! what could be better than that??

sunday, sept 11 – PROJECT PLAY: LIVE YOUR YOGA

our GRAND finale!! join us for a fantastic and fun field trip!! we’re heading over to the city’s historic Deturk Round Barn to do some yoga “in the round”…with two-hours of fun and some amazing guest teachers, we’re going to have a BLAST!! suggested donation is $40, and you can sign up/donate here or join our YogaAid team — please mark your calendars for the 2nd come “be the change” with us!

want to help, but can’t make any of these? or just want to do more? you can always make a donation directly to our team here!

let’s go out…again!

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

hey there…are you ready to get out? i am.

join us this sunday at 9 a.m. for a fun-filled OUTDOOR FLOW class at Redwood Empire Farm. jeff and ariel have been good friends of three dog since before we opened our doors and ariel holds the title of “first student ever” at the studio…they are also amazing farmers and they are opening their fields to us! (here’s a map to get you there.)

if you’ve been to the studio on thursday evenings, you may have seen the beautiful produce and flowers they bring each week for CSA members….or maybe you’ve caught them at the farmer’s market…you’d know them by their friendly smiles and inspiring enthusiasm.

we are so thrilled to be heading outside again…there’s really nothing like yoga in the fresh air with our feet on the earth. we’re also more than excited to be celebrating the culmination of our SUMMER OF LOVE for the Redwood Empire Food Bank. so far this summer we’ve raise five huge barrels of food for those in need…and we’re well on our way to donating more than $3,000. all we need now is a strong finish!

soooooooooo…..please come join us at the farm on Sunday (there will be NO classes at the studio)…please bring your mat…and a food item or cash donation for the food bank. for every food item we recieve, we’ll add $2 to our SUMMER OF LOVE total and we’ll match any cash/check donations!

we are so grateful for all the contributions we have gotten so far…you all ROCK!!
